Hey all, thanks for a great Holiday Party, and here's another way to celebrate!
Starting at 8:00 am on December 26, I along with any hearty souls wishing to join, will depart Kit Carson Park in Escondido on a journey up Highland Valley to Ramona, Old Highway 78 (and New Highway 78) to Santa Ysabel, up Mesa Grande to Palomar S. Grade and down S. Grade/76 to Rincon, then back via Lake Wohlford. Check it out here: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1708028 (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1708028)
We need to convince Ingrid to take that day off from work.
Ok, I was curious if our pie food stops would be open on the 26th, since how can it be a pie ride w/o pie? Anyway, Julian Pie Factory in Santa Ysabel is open but Mother's is closed on Wednesdays and I doubt they'll specifically be open for the day after Xmas. So..........still on this day and we bring our own food? The long range weather forecast looks good, so far.
I was wondering the same thing regarding Mother's Kitchen.
I guess we could call them to find out, but I figure if they're closed then skip the 2nd pie and stop at the bottom of the descent in that quickie-mart.
It's gonna be cold coming down anyhow and a good way to stay warm on the descent is to start it right after finishing the climb.
Excellent idea Nerius. I checked the "quickie-mart" is open on the 26th. I know you like gut bomb meals in the middle of these rides so I'm checking on whether the Mexican place next door will be open too.
Now the only way for your plan to work is if you take it easy up the East grade and hang back with Me, Sean, and Bill on his new mountain/cross hybrid bike he built and says he's riding.
Of course it also means it stay dry.
Sean, Bill and Nerius (and anyone else joining us) - We are gut bomb ready, Jilberto's Taco Shop is open on the 26th so after the decent down Palomar we can have carnitas and maybe a churro, that would equal pie and ice cream.........right?
Too bad it's only one small hill to go from there.
But I do want to see Bill's bike. Sounds like something I would like to ride.
Hey guys I have good news.
Just called Mother's Kitchen and they _are_ going to be open on Wed the 26th.
So we can have a pie there after all.
Great news, now Sean needs to commit to the ride and that 30% chance of rain needs to go down to 0%!! Thanks for checking.
No excuses Sean! Chance of rain down to 10 percent.
For you guys riding up Palomar after Xmas. I hope Santa was nice to you... ;D
It's raining, ugh! Really not sure I want to start off in the rain, Santa did NOT bring the rain gear I asked for Xmas.
Raining here in Esco. I move for a reschedule to Saturday - looks like it will be clear then.
Sean is out, especially with a winter weather advisory for the mountains. And last time I checked, it is called Mt Palomar......
I may see if it clears and join the Wednesday Fallbrook ride at 9:00 or, eat holiday day food as I sit on the couch all day:)

Pie Ride Recap (brief)
After all the early morning postings there were texts flying through the airwaves discussing the weather and our sanity. But, Anthony and Bill convinced me to go but what they didn't know is that I was still unsure. My uncertainty caused me to be the last to arrive at Kit Carson but I was still on time. Accounted for in the parking lot.....Nerius, Bill, Anthony and me. Why are we standing in a wet, cold rainy parking lot at 8:00 when my bed was perfectly warm and cozy......good question.
As promised Bill brought his mountain/cross/road/hybrid/fraken-bike. Confused, yep me to as it's hard to tell where the mountain bike ends and the road bike begins. But hey, it's all good for me because at 35 pounds it's twice what my bike weights and it can only slow him down. And since my place is at the rear of the peleton, advantage Sean. To compensate for the heavy bike Bill shaved his densely forested beard off and now looks like a respectable young man:)
Anthony is dressed in full winter gear, Nerius looks like he ain't afraid of no rain as he has no rain gear and Bill is missing his sporty tartan jersey. Well it's decided and we depart the parking lot, I am feeling spunky and I take the lead followed by Anthony, Bill and Nerius at the rear.
It was rainy and cold, there was wheel minimal spray and I must have picked the right gear because I stayed very dry as we headed towards our first stop. There was talk of a flat on Nerius's bike but it was a false alarm. But Nerius did point out that he got new tires, freshly cleaned his bike and was not looking forward to getting it dirty again. The rain/mist did not let up the entire way to our first stop.
I can't say if it was my focus on the lousy weather or the good company but it seemed like only minutes before our first stop and some warm coffee. I needed some fuel so a bagel and coffee worked just fine, Bill had some pastry kinda thing and the tuff guys stuck to liquids. Of course nice warm ones but no food. Best of all Anthony treated us all to our food and drink.
Well we stuck together the whole time and managed to have some good conversations including Nerius looking forward to getting home to help his niece/nephew with their new toys. Anthony explained his love of numbers and his ability to manipulate them at will, I may have him prepare my taxes next year. I learned in addition to a couple of teenagers Bill has an 8 year old. Not sure where he gets the energy to ride.
There was a winter storm watch for the mountains with snow down to 5,000 feet but we never did see snow on Palomar. The temps were predicted to be in the low 40's at the top so it was good that Anthony was in full winter gear.
We progressed without incident until Nerius got a bit antsy and decided to take off and leave the three of us behind. I think he was more interested in the toys that his nephew. Me, Bill and Anthony carried on as planned and it did stop raining around 11:00 and finally the sun popped out. I did not return to the parking lot as I live close by and went directly home. I only assume Bill and Anthony made it home safely.
Signed,
The Cuatro Amigos
Sean, you forgot to describe the incident of the flock of wild turkeys nearly attacking BIll on Mesa Grande.
Now, Nerius posted "B-I-bickie-bye" at 11:02 a.m. This seems inconsistent with Sean's description. Did Nerius stop in the middle of the ride to post to the forum? OR... Is Nerius really that fast? OR ... Did none of this happen? More proof required...
[EDIT: actually there was a 1 hr forum offset, so Nerius posted at 10:02 am. Still, very suspicious...]
I totally and unequivocally concur with Karl. The creative fictional account of the ride was just that...fictional. We want photographic evidence because we know that Bill always documents the Palomar rides with photos. And we also know for a fact that Sean wouldn't even dare step outside if it was drizzling, much less get on a bike when the ground was completely wet. I can possibly see Nerius doing a wet Palomar ride but a posting at 10 am is highly SUSPICIOUS. But also Anthony's post of not having rain gear and then all of a sudden riding in wet conditions just doesn't seem to fly. We will all have a discussion of this at Stone Brewery and have this out. :)
Sean's post is a completely accurate description of the ride yesterday. I should know since I was there. Discussions this evening will be fine but I must defend Sean of any character assassination attempts.
So far there are 3 of you who are defending yourselves, although Nerius' account of attacking turkeys just doesn't seem plausible. Whoever heard of that? They are usually running for their lives. Bill seems suspiciously absent on the posting here. I don't think he wants to incriminate himself...yet. Still want to see those photos.
Now, I was holding my trump card until it was required to play it. I received a text from Anthony (unless someone stole his phone) at 8:26am yesterday: "just in case you didn't see the website we bailed on the 3iq ride." explanations still required...
Thank you Anthony for your support. I cannot speak to the posting time stamp anomalies or the texting time stamp anomalies. I can only guess sun spots caused some level of clock distortion or perhaps some delayed Y2K computer kinda thing. Or most likely the same gremlin that prevents big foot from using voting buttons and does not allow me to post photos caused some time errors.
I expect this conspiracy attitude from the Queen of the Mountains but it seems Karlos has gone to the dark side.
As Nerius mentioned, I cannot begin to understand the mind of a turkey and why one would chose to attack but my bet is losing so many loved ones so close to the holidays would cause aggression in the most docile of creatures. It seems Ursula has a good understanding of the psychology of tasty foul and I would suggest she pursue a government grant to study the random violent behavior exhibited by our favorite Thanksgiving meal.
I stand by my RECAP as being 100% accurate. Nerius, Bill, Anthony and me know the truth and no one can take that from us. We will submit to a lie detector if anyone has one. Then again a Stone brew is a pretty good truth serum:)
The truth will set you free..........
Has anyone see Anthony's phone???? I think the person who stole it meant to say we NAILED the 3iq ride, not "we bailed".
Philistines.
Personally, I believe.
There are some things I know to be truth:
Pictures of Bigfoot
The Tooth Fairy visits
Pro Wrestling
and Sean climbing Palomar in inclement weather.
I believe your story, Sean. I read it several times and think it's 100% accurate. I just have one question. Did any of you take your bikes out of your cars?
........and we have an intelligent winner among us, well done Frank.
Frank, thanks for your support...and it seems you read between the lines. And your question is a good one but the better question is did any bikes make it into the cars? The riddle is solved by Frank. Yes we meet in the parking lot in the cold rain with no intention of riding. Bill being the ride leader wanted to show up just in case others did not see the cancellation posting. We decided to meet and go for coffee.
We left the parking lot in 4 cars and drove to Starbucks, warm, dry and toasty:)
The recap is 100% accurate. It's just a matter of your reading perspective.
Gold star to Frank.............
Going for another slice on Saturday. 8 am. Kit Carson. Be there!
Correction: meeting in mall parking lot due to Kit Carson surface repaving. See new post:
