Title: SRAM - Shimano combo - anybody tried it?
Post by: Jeff Levin on November 16, 2007, 11:11:43 AM
Has anyone tried using a Shimano Ultegra or Dura-Ace 10 speed rear derailleur with a SRAM 12-28 cassette? Does it work well? Any problems?

Thanks!

Jeff,  I wish I had an answer for you but it looks like it might be a tough question.  You might try the "wrenching" forum at Roadbikereview.com..seems like a lot of the users there spend a lot of time answering questions about specific components.  I'll bet someone will have an answer for you.

Good luck, Tony (new guy)

Hey Jeff 2,
I'm a bit sick today and goofing off on the computer so I thought I would investigate your question.
The SRAM website indicates that their cassettes are "....cross-compatible with the most popular 10 speed system on the market today....". So it seems like the cassette spacing is not an issue if we're talking the other "S" company  ;). Which I think we are.
Next is the Ultegra derailleur. On the other "S" website, their technical section indicates that you must have a RD-6500-SS Ultegra rear derailleur. Or a "short cage" rear derailleur in order to be able to use 28 tooth cog in the rear. You just need to properly adjust the "B" nut for cassette/chain clearance when you have shifted to the 28. There is a good description on this adjustment in their website technical documentstion page. It's in this pdf file:
http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/Ultegra/RD6500/SI-53Z0C_v1_m56577569830611842.pdf (http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/Ultegra/RD6500/SI-53Z0C_v1_m56577569830611842.pdf)
The long cage is good to 27 max.
So I think the short answer to your question is yes if you have short cage RD and properly adjust the "B" nut.
Must be the drugs. I hate being sick.....
