Title: Be safe out there
Post by: Heidi on April 21, 2013, 11:54:34 AM
I know we all ride in this bike lane regularly.  Matt and I saw the aftermath on the way to the Y this morning to swim.  Unnerving.  Hope everyone is safe.

This fatality is tragic news. I received this email from Bryan Jones, Carlsbad Transportation Director

"Subject: Fatal Traffic Collision

It is with great sadness that I share this tragic information of a fatal traffic collision on El Camino Real near La Costa that involved a bike rider. The motorist stopped and the investigation is still ongoing. I do not know the details and will be working closely with the Carlsbad Police Department. On a similar note, I am working on an article right now that will hopefully inspire change in the transportation profession to further consider designing our streets to further reduce these fatal collisions involving people walking and biking in our communities. We have plateaued at 32,000 deaths a year in the United States for a number of years. This is equivalent to four Newtown school shootings, 365 days a year. Granted this is down from an all-time high of 54,000 deaths a couple decades ago and we still have a long way to go to approach zero. When the article is released I hope you will share it far and wide to help empower people in our communities.

Bryan"
