Title: Regular ride leader help for May 17 needed
Post by: Robert Abraham on May 08, 2014, 06:25:46 PM
I will most likely be off on other cycling adventures the weekend of Saturday the 17, so I need someone to help get the ride started that day. I will leave route slips at the light pole on Saturday with the other slips, in a baggie clearly labeled. I appreciate it, whomever can do this.

Change of plans! Because of weather and fire concerns, our brevet has been rescheduled. I will be there this Saturday if anyone is riding. I believe the route should be clear, but we can take a more mellow pace and stay as a group depending on conditions. However, I will not be available on May 24. I will have route slips with me on Saturday for the 24th for anyone that might be able to bring them to the start. I also will probably have to change the route for May 24 due to the burn areas. I'm thinking right now that I may just switch the routes for the 24th and the 31st. Check the website for details to come.

Hi Robert,

I just posted on Anthony's post about the Saturday Long Ride. My two cents is that the club as a whole might want to consider canceling Saturday rides out of OCRR. I think it would be wise, and considerate of us to stay out of that area this weekend. They are still battling the fire there, and many people have been evacuated. It's not clear how many have been allowed back in yet to evacuated areas. The evacuation areas included all of Lake San Marcos. I've been seeing smoke all the way from my house billowing up from there since late this morning. It looks like it could be a bit better right now. Even if they manage to contain the fire by tonight or tomorrow, it will probably take at least a few days if not longer for them to finish putting out hot spots. Just my two cents.

Robert,
As someone who lives and works in North County and who rode her bike to work this morning and is not sensitive to air quailty, I have to agree with Lisa.  The fire is still burning, the air quality is not great (my sinus are itching and my eyes are red) and there are still mandatory evacuations in place.  I think as responsible and contentious citizens we should cancel the ride, or at a very minimum change the route to not head out to Bonsall.  Speaking as someone who lives in a neighborhood that burned in 2008, I'm sure there will be a lot of lookie-lou vultures driving in the area wanting to see burned houses and burned shrubbery (and not volunteering to help the home-owners clean up) - I actually had people wanting to come into my back yard so they could take pictures of the burned canyon behind my house (gosh I'm not bitter about the lack of help am I??).  We really don't need to add our group of cyclists to that mess.
