Title: Trans Sierra 122 miles
Post by: Nerius Landys on May 15, 2014, 02:52:47 PM
I would like to spark some interest in doing a very epic mountainous road bike ride sometime this year between May and August.

This would be a 20 hour (or less) door to door ordeal with no overnight stay (except for naps in the car).
We would leave very early in the morning (e.g. 3:30 A.M.) from North County in a car, arrive just North of Bakersfield at around 7:00 and start bike riding from the small town of Ducor.  The ride goes across the Sierras with very few intersections where one must choose between left, straight, or right, and little to no traffic.  All roads are paved, but there might be debris in the road on the high mountain passes.  The main climbs of the day are Parker Pass and Sherman Pass.  The plan would be to finish the ride in daylight, or get "sag help".  A designated driver would provide sag support for the riders at least every 20 miles, as there are virtually no food stops along the way.  The group of riders would ideally stay more or less together to make the sag driver's job a bit easier.

I would volunteer my Prius as the vehicle, which could fit four riders plus designated driver.  (And 4 bikes assuming I can borrow a hatchback rack - already have 2 roof racks.)  I could volunteer to drive and do the sag, although if we found someone else to be designated driver (perhaps even a non-cyclist) I would be more than happy to do the ride.  I am planning to provide nutrition for this ride as well (water and bars, perhaps some sandwiches, breakfast, and anything specific you want to bring).  Because this is a ride with lots of climbing and because of daylight constraints, I would suggest being able to climb Palomar in an hour and a half to assure yourself that you won't be out of your "comfort zone" for this ride.
