Title: Hot, hot, hot - Long riders what do we do Saturday?
Post by: Anthony Scozzari on October 07, 2015, 09:54:43 AM
We'll monitor the temp predictions but it seems most of the county is 88-98 this weekend, so considering we won't be able to avoid extreme (for us) heat, what would the long riders like to do?

We can do an out and back on the coast to La Jolla Shores.

We could move up the San Clemente ride but maybe a suffer fest in the heat isn't the way to go either?

We could do this:

or we could modify the above or similar route to keep it close to 50 miles (give or take) and get the group out of the heat sooner and if individuals want to go longer they can arrange on their own as singles or subset of the group.

I'd like some help here, what do you folks think?
Thanks,
Anthony

The route you posted going through Del Dios, RSF to the Coast seems ideal.

Even though I'm riding in cool weather in CT  8), I might suggest a small tweak to that route. Instead of taking Via de la Valle straight west to 101 (by the racetrack and I-5 interchange there), you might jog east the short bit to El Camino Real, left up Sun Valley to S8/Lomas Santa Fe and then to 101 as a more pleasant, traffic friendly alternative, with a little extra elevation.

Thank you for responding to the group email, just to me or, here, the NCCC forum page.  I received 9 responses with 6 different suggestions……….I am a little sorry I asked.  To me, the best way to choose what to do for Saturday is ignore all of you so you’re all equally dissatisfied.  :0

Most of the respondents still want to go inland but we’re not going to do the listed route, it has us climbing too much after the stop when the heat will have gone from bad to horrid.  So we’re going to flip it a bit and do the following NEWLY modified route:

Old Castle, Dn Couser, Up Rice, Green Cyn, Warmlands (61 mi, 4,400’)
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/10725254

We’ll get most of the climbing done before the stop at Rainbow, mile 35, and then it is mostly downhill and maybe a tailwind.  Hydrate yourselves over the next couple of days and see you Saturday.

Best,
Anthony
