We now have to pre-register before entering Camp Pendleton. The form was published February 1st - click here (http://www.pendleton.marines.mil/About/BaseInformation/BaseAccess/CampPendletonBikeRouteRequest.aspx) to pop it up. Takes about 2 minutes flat and gets you on base for the entire year, although you will still need ID in order to get in. Please register before March 1 as, after then, you will not get in if you are not pre-registered.
Karl
note: the Sunday, Feb 14 (V-day) ride goes through the base. We should be OK, but I would recommend registering a week prior to that. They claim it takes 6 or 7 days to process the request.
Unfortunately, the above link to the request form has changed to a secure form
https://mccscp.wufoo.com/forms/camp-pendleton-bike-route-access-form/
Their website evidently is fluid. An alternate instruction is to:
1. Go to www.pendleton.marines.mil
2. Select Base Access (right side of page)
3. Click on - Camp Pendleton Bike Route Access (Purple Icon)
If you diligently filled out the previous form as I did and don't get an acknowledgment within a week, perhaps you will need to redo it.
Sorry about that - Karl
Karl,
Do you know the status of the work being done on I5? It's my understanding that the shoulder is usable on weekends going north. Is this true? For several reasons, I normally prefer to avoid the base, and for reasons I won't go into, do not wish to have to register to do so if need be.

Robert,
There will be times where the I-5 stretch will be down for construction. Doesn't happen too often, although it is as affecting us right now. Caltrans usually provides bike shuttle service when this occurs. If you prefer not to register, then you'll be at the mercy of Caltrans, just as we were post 9/11. I should think you won't be inconvenienced much.
Karl
I completed the form awhile ago but got no response.
Does anyone know if they send some level of notification indicating that we have been approved? And if so, has anyone gotten notification.
Thanks
Sean - We went through the base yesterday and I asked if we were going to receive any notification, because most of us had filled out the form as soon as it was available and hadn't heard anything. Anyway, the guard said that we would not receive any notification except implicitly when we might be denied if we hadn't registered. We'll see how that works. We had a group of about 16 go through. We had to remove Drivers Licenses (I used a non-driver CA ID when re-entering from Las Pulgas southbound) and they scanned them. The same protocol will occur after March 1, they said. The only difference will be that the ID scan will issue entry denial if you're not registered. Interestingly, it also scans for expiration as 2 of our riders (Veso and Jim Schwarz) had expired licenses. A little bit of sweet persuasion got us through, but I imagine a harder stance will be taken after March 1.
Karl
Good to know, thanks Karl.
I re-read the Pendleton website and it does say you will ONLY get notification if you were denied or they needed more information. So, I guess the true test is a scan at the gate.
Ride on..........
I haven't rode the coast north bound as of late, so anyone have issues riding Camp Pel?
Rode Pendelton last Saturday N & S: the military are still checking as you enter with some problems for the hand held loggers to recognize some licences but all got through. NOTE: Pendelton is closed next weekend Aug 6/7 for an event. The I5 in both directions has been re-opened, although sharing the shoulder with huge trucks a few feet to your left is rather scary.
