Title: Route file names and Garmin
Post by: Jeff Reissman on April 15, 2016, 10:58:01 PM
I wanted to bring something to your attention about uploading files to a Garmin.  The names of the route files begin with "NCCC_".  When I load the file into my garmin most of the rest of the route name is cut off since there are a limited number of characters displayed on the screen.  Is it possible to start loading files without the "NCCC-" at the beginning of the name so it would be easier to find the file in the course directory on my Garmin.  I tried changing the file name in my computer but this doesn't seem to make a difference.  There must be an internal route name in the file that is used by by Garmin when a file is uploaded.  Many people are probably having a similar problem.

That's a good point. Short, succinct unique names are best for loading into garmin and even scanning on the phone app. Since all the rides are now in the Club Account, we have 4 people managing the routes and we can at least quite easily remove the NCCC_ prefix.
Thanks for bringing it up - Karl

All,

I'm working on renaming many of my routes as I type this. Originally, the "NCCC" was to help me keep things organized in my personal route catalog when I took over as ride leader. Not as many of us were using GPS, including myself. However, I do understand now about shorter names. I will also spend some time editing the auto-generated directions to make those simpler as well.

And it's a trade as we route managers want to leave some keywords in the names to narrow searches in the new NCCC Club Account Route Library. That way you can search for routes that have,  e.g. "Wohlford," "Circle R," "De Luz," etc in their name. Your ride leaders are working on it.
