Title: Paying for Strava?
Post by: karlos on May 23, 2020, 10:34:17 AM
What's everyone's opinion of Strava's new subscription policy? I think it's fun, seeing everyone's rides and still being allowed to give and get kudos and comments, but we no longer can see how friends and others do on the Strava segments we all love. However, at my age I'm not that curious to compare to others, because I know where I stand. However, I ALWAYS look at the graph of My Results, especially while watching my slow recovery from hip replacement, which only those graphs show me. I was shocked that I could only see the last few efforts. My complete history require $5/month now. Is everyone else now paying?

I decided, coincidentally, a week or 2 before their policy change to pay for a membership.  I decided to 2 reasons, I want to support small companies I use and it did seem odd to me to NOT pay for Strava considering what I got out of it and I don't believe Strava can monetize their site like FB, so if I want them to continue, I should pay for my use of it, similar to my paid support of RWGPS.

Same here, I had been using Strava for about a month and really enjoy the data it compiles. I was considering paying when the change came.  I do not mind supporting it.

I'm also in for the same reason as Anthony. And I'll put a plug in for the paid membership for RWGPS, too. Their business model refuses to rely on ads and their only revenue source is paid subscriptions. They have the best routing platform out there and NCCC is also a club member to support our organized RWGPS route library. One of their founders informed me that 95% of RWGPS users are freeloaders; only about 5% pay for the service from which the other 95% benefits.

I'm not a fan of paying for Strava mainly because I've got Garmin gear.  The Garmin Connect site offers enough for me that paying $5/month doesn't make sense.  Only really used it for some ride training groups and race training programs that I was part of in the past.  Now that they've made it pay to play, I'll likely cut-off my Garmin sync and close it down.  Granted, the $5 isn't a big deal, I just currently will not get $5 worth of value that Garmin doesn't already provide.
