Title: Good climbing roads
Post by: Mark Nicholson on December 04, 2021, 02:09:59 PM
Hey everyone

I'm getting my cycling fitness back and want to test myself out on some hills. Where is a good place, with little/no traffic, for me to practice?

Hi Mark,

SD County has plenty of hills, but also plenty of auto traffic.  It's just how it is in a place
that so many people want to live!

I would suggest:  Highland Valley Road (near Escondido/Poway areas and Bandy Cyn. nearby);
east of Julian, including the desert areas (winter is a good time to ride in the desert);
Palomar Mountain.  Also suggest using ridewithgps.com and searching for areas based on elevation
gain.  Also, NCCC has several groups that regularly climb hills.
