In case you've already marked your calendar with this month's rides, please note that the Sunrise Hwy / Pine Creek epic starting in Pine Valley has been switched from May 23 to May 30, giving a little more freedom for a long Sunday drive on Memorial Day weekend. This also avoids any conflicts - there was at least one - with the Amgen Tour of California which finishes on May 23 in Thousand Oaks. Start time is a little later, 9am, as it takes a solid hour to get to the start from Del Mar. For those who've never done the Laguna triangle going up Sunrise Hwy, this is a lovely ride which we have done the past three years in May. If the Pine Creek option, up alongside Noble Canyon, is keeping you away from the ride, come and at least do the 47 mile loop. Not everyone does the Pine Creek loop, and some have been known to do the Sunrise Hwy climb again to get in some more miles, while the billy goats grunt up the steep little mountain road.
Are you doing kitchen Creek? ...Can you give us a link to a route of the ride? If you are not doing Kitchen Creek, you might want to consider that option. It's awesome. I have also done Pine Creek, and I'd much rather go up Kitchen Creek and down 79.. Here is the Kitchen Creek Loop... http://connect.garmin.com/activity/32167969 If you want a shorter option you can go up Kitchen Creek and down Sunrise.
This is our standard ride - just follow the link for route slips under the Sunday Long Rides. We do not do Kitchen Creek. We do the first and third loops of the recent Mt. Laguna Classic, the 2nd loop being Kitchen Creek. The Kitchen Creek loop can easily replace the Pine Creek loop at the end of the ride, descending back into Pine Valley along Sunrise Hwy. Just gives another option for this ride, especially for those wanting to avoid Pine Creek (although Kitchen Creek is not exactly a piece of cake) or a future ride out of Pine Valley.
This is a great route and I encourage all to give er a go!
Looks like the weather will co-operate too!
-------
In case you can't make it, there is a rando ride next week on June 5th, that does the Kitchen Creek loop.
From Pine Valley, it goes out to Jacumba and then up Kitchen Creek, etc.
It's around 125 miles, with the normal elevation gain.
