Courtesy of Pete Penseyres, here's a women's cycling club showing how to make a group lane change for a left-hand turn.

Title: Reminder: we can make better left turns
Post by: karlos on September 03, 2011, 03:02:01 PM
All - I thought I would bump this post up as a reminder to how to negotiate a left turn while riding in a group. The front riders signal to the rear to start the turn but keep riding straight - it is the riders at the back who make sure it's safe, take control of left turn signals, and then move left first, with the rest of the group moving left from back to front. This avoids splitting the group and having cars in the left lane get trapped - by cyclists way ahead moving left, while cyclists are to the right of the vehicle. A dangerous situation and one which can leave motorists fuming, as we faced today in Valley Center trying to turn left onto Miller Rd.
Think "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" whenever turning left in a group and you'll remember the maneuver.
Enjoy the video if you haven't seen it - Karl

Wow - it's been almost 10 years since I bumped this post. Besides showing the best way for NCCC groups to prepare for a left turn it just shows the importance and the incredible safety of lane control. On a high speed multi-lane arterial without a bike lane, that rightmost lane is yours and is the safest place to be, especially when you're with your mates.
