Buffered bike lanes are a bad idea.  You are not allowed to ride on the buffered part when trying to make a left turn.
They plan on putting in a bike lane.  and they are getting community input.  This is the wrong way to do it.

SDCBC and other Bike Savvy traffic engineers suggested that the bike lane not be buffered.   A regular bike lane should be added.   It should be cleaned and maintained and cyclist should be able to move over to the left to make left turns when necessary. They should not be required to stay in the bike lane.

Who is putting up this petition.  Did they get input from the community and our Cycling Traffic Engineers?

SDCBC was asked for their input about the Encinitas bike lane.  It would be good for the city not to be getting mixed messages about what we want.  There is an Encinitas Bike Friendly group being formed.  it would be good for everyone to agree before giving mixed messages to the city.

I have to agree that this is the wrong way to do it. If the city really cares about the safety of cyclists, it will reconstruct the roadway to have standard width lanes with a generous bike lane and a reduced speed limit. Even if it goes in as planned, I wont use it. It will be full of joggers and peeps going against the flow.

In the san franscisco link the guy in the separated bike path is talking about "sharing' the road without a helmet and on a tricycle.

Nowhere is there a way to contact the petition originator to ask a question or make a comment

Id like to know where. It came from

Here is an example they used of the buffered bike lane: http://www.sfbike.org/main/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Picture-21.png One example of the engineering difficulties.when you get to an intersection, on a regular bike lane, the right lane becomes the right turn lane when they are continuing straight and cyclists move left to the traffic lane so that they are not hooked by cars turning right. When you have a lane like this, bikes can't move with traffic straight without the problem of being right hooked by cars turning right in front of them.
