All - I would normally post this on our Education board on this Forum, but this is important enough that I feel that all riders should know this stuff. California Vehicle Code section CVC 21202 is at the heart of what is taught in the Smart Cycling classes on your legal rights to coexisting with traffic, as well as the absolute proven best practices for safety. I would also add that when I go over this stuff in Smart Cycling, that we include a heavy dose of how to do this with courtesy.

About 25% of NCCC riders have taken this class. If you haven't yet, look at the slate of classes offered for 2019 at https://sdbikecoalition.org/smart-cycling (the Oceanside ones are free and headed up by Pete Penseyres, one of our local cycling icons).

I encourage all, whether you've taking Smart Cycling or not, to watch this 8 minute video. It was put together by Keri Caffrey, who is the brains and energy behind the equally good Cycling Savvy program.

Thanks Karl! Very good information : ) Back in 1999, I would have avoided a collision that cost me a life flight to Scripps and 2 and half years off the bike.

Thanks Karl, great video. Now if we could only get drivers to watch it...………….

I'm also attaching the "Freedom card" that they put together along with the video. It is a good thing to have on you should an officer ever try to cite you for CVC 21202. You could show it to the officer and make sure you both agree that the answer is NO to every exception before he writes a ticket. It is small format and can be printed on a 2-sided card to keep handy in your saddle bag.

Karl,

Really good stuff. I announced this posting before yesterday's Regular Ride.  Thank you for your continuous efforts in making this club very good.  Happy New Years!

Bumping this back into visibility as a reminder why it's legal to control the right most travel lanes through the new Cardiff cycletrack area on Hwy 101, which is nearing completion. Some serious accidents have occurred when folks riding at their "normal" speed have tried to use this facility. Good news is that the narrower lanes and, indeed, the berms that are causing crashes have caused motorists to slow down enough so that Encinitas can actually lower the speed limit from 45 to 35 mph, like in Solana Beach. So if you're comfortable controlling the lane in Solana Beach, the experience should be more similar than if the high speeds were legal, which were probably 50+ previously. Anyway, the 8 minute video is good to watch even if you watched it before - I did and it reinforces my understanding of the law.
