This was sent to me by President of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Keith Laughlin,

Yesterday, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced he would be stepping down from the Obama Administration.

Secretary LaHood understands that biking, walking and other active transportation modes play an important role in building healthy communities and healthy economies.

In fact, he singled out rail-trails in particular saying they have "done more for health care than anything we've ever done in America.”

But he backed his words up with actions by fighting to preserve funding for trails and active transportation as part of a balanced approach.

Now we need to make sure that the next Transportation Secretary continues in LaHood’s footsteps.

Please send a message to President Obama urging him to nominate a successor who understands the importance of trails, active transportation and healthy communities.

The Transportation Secretary is one of the most influential people in the administration on how we connect with our communities through our roads, rails, trails and sidewalks.

Next year, a new transportation bill will be debated â€" and the new secretary will play an important role in determining how billions of dollars will be spent to get us from point A to point B.

That’s why it’s important that your voice is heard now.

We need to ensure that the next head of the Department of Transportation will build upon Secretary LaHood’s legacy of linking transportation, health and economic development programs of federal, state and local governments.

Please take action today.

Sincerely,

Keith Laughlin
