Friends of Cycling:

Please plan to join us for the celebration of the new safer bike treatments in Encinitas (Bike Lane and Sharrows)

We planned the time so that you could coordinate it with the end of your Saturday ride, March 23.  Your participation helps in educating both motorists and cyclists in the correct use of lane control making cycling safer for everyone.

Please plan to join us for the Joy Ride through town, Raffles for Schwag pickup at Encinitas Bike Shops and Lunch at Hapifish/Counter Culture.  Here's the event: https://www.facebook.com/events/215515451924634

Please forward this on to any local individuals or Clubs that may be interested in attending.

Thanks a lot,

Judy Frankel

Although March 23 rides are published, I encourage Jeff Gross and Jim Hutchings to be creative and try to hook up with the start of this celebration. Our numbers will give the celebration more power. Since many of our NCCC routes utilize this stretch, it will say a lot to show our approval by being there. We probably all know someone who has been injured through this section - long riders Matt Swanson was doored (broken hip) and Bill Fagan did a face plant (sprained neck, off the bike for close to a year) north of Leucadia Blvd by being too far to the right and bad road conditions. The sharrows and new bike lane solve both these problems. If you can make the joy ride, it's just another way to say THANKS to the many individuals (Judy for one) and groups (Encinitas City Council and Traffic Engineering, Encinitas Bike & Ped Committee, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, etc.) that played a role.

Thanks Karl.  These changes for all our safety were 2 years in the making with hours of hard  work by volunteers and motivated by the death of Jim Schwarzman and the ticketing of fellow cyclist riding legally controlling the lane.  Our job is not done.

Paint on the lane helps but getting the full value out of the changes come with the education of motorists and cyclists in the rights of cyclists to control the lane and the necessity  for motorists to change lanes for  safe passing.  Your help is needed to demonstrate full lane control by riding down the middle over the sharrows to discourage in lane passing by motorists.

There is not enough room in the same lane on these roads for side by side sharing of the lane.   Don't be a gutter bunny riding in the road edge or  door zone or by riding inconsistently in and out of parked cars.

Please be part of the educational process by attending this great event.

In this internet publishing age the rides can be changed to start/end on the coast or the route changed to make this part of the Saturday ride.  It would be great if you could accommodate this.  Sharrows will also be going in to Solana Beach next as well as other places.  We are the change to make cycling more safe and enjoyable.

Thanks,

Judy
