A request from Kristine Schindler, BikeWalkSolana member.  Contact Kristine (phone and email below) if you're interested in helping out.

QuoteWe need Ride Marshal volunteers for Bike the Coast this year on Saturday, November 1st.

This is about a 4-5 hour commitment on the morning of the event.

We need to find good, law abiding bicyclists to help with this effort, which will focus again in certain ‘problem’ areas in Leucadia, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Del Mar.  You will be on your bike covering a certain part of the ride route in one of these communities.  You and the rest of the Ride Marshal team will be important eyes on the road, provide encouragement to participants to follow the rules of the road, be seen and engage with law enforcement if needed, cheer people on, educate riders on the proper use of sharrows, report any issues to the RM lead, etc.  Our goal is to help make it a safer and better ride for all.

Note:  Ride Marshal volunteers will get free entry for the SD Century or BTC 2015, so that is a nice incentive offered up by Jim Curl to be part of the Ride Marshal team.  And a free t-shirt too.

Thanks for your help.

I've volunteered at all these rides from the outset. However I'm very disappointed by Jim Curl's greed, the reason I worked the ride was because it supposedly raised money for SDCBC which then would be used to improve our bicycling facilities in North San Diego County. Last year was an eye opener, Curl took 1/2 of the beer garden money, money that the breweries who donated the beer thought was going 100% to the SDCBC. I cannot support a phony 'fundraiser' that in reality enriches an individual at the expense of our coastal city communities. Our cities waive fees and provide traffic control under the impression that this event is a legitimate fundraiser not a profit maker for one guy.
