Can some one please clarify? Described starting location does not match the map. Do we start at Kit Carson and then ride to OCRR?

I think part of that route is incorrect Dale . I was told the ride starts and ends in Kit Carson Park

Dale - The RWGPS link has been corrected. The original route started at OCRR and that was the link that Anthony sent me. Nerius changed the start and Anthony sent me an updated RWGPS route. It's a little less miles and elevation from there  :(. Thanks for being Johnny on the Spot and noticing!

The correct start location is probably already on the rides list but I'll clarify here even though it's probably redundant.  Kit Carson Park at 7:30.  For first-timers, please note that this is a large park.  We meet at the Park And Ride section, which is at the South end of the park.  It's also rather close to Bear Valley Parkway, the "main drag".

OK so I'm kind of wondering if we need route slips for this ride.  In fact I'm not even sure which roads we'll decide to take - perhaps it's best to play it by ear.  For example, Wohlford versus Valley Center is something we can decide on-the-go based on people's wishes.

A group ride where we all know the way is perhaps what we could have.

Rumor has it that Jeff Baxter will be down from San Jose for the pi ride  8)

For those who don't normally do the Sunday ride, with different start locations for the rides, click on "Roadies > Ride start directions." The link for each available ride start will open a google map for you. The Kit Carson link shows exactly the gathering point in the parking lot for the pi ride.

Here's a little trivia quiz to wet your appetite for tomorrow's ride (and I might have quizzed you on this before).
What is the mile marker at the top of Mount Palomar, at the yield sign (junction)?  Hint: the mile markers go in 0.2 mile increments.  The engineers decided to put in a lot of mile marker signs, presumably in order to remind the cyclists at every fifth of a mile that they have a lot of climbing left, a lot of pain to go.

karlos

To add one question to Nerius', what is the last elevation sign you see before Mother's? Fortunately, the traffic engineers do NOT put elevation markers every 100' to prolong the suffering.

Nerius, at the speed you ride, I'm surprised this was more than a blur.  Did you have a flat or drop a water bottle next to the sign?

I climb slow enough to not only see the mile number, but also the sign's manufacturer, where they're located, how thick the sign is...

Hi Guys- a few points to ponder. I test road the route from Kit Carson last Sunday to Santa Ysabel. GPS route was flawless.

Notes from pre-ride of NCCC Pie Ride
Expect a 1-1.5, even 2 water bottle per hour use rate. Need to stay up on food too. Will be HOT tomorrow....

Park to Valley Center: pretty much all uphill, decent roads

Woods Valley Road: given a 0730 start we'll have low sun angle in our eyes, so the cars overtaking will have issues seeing us. Be certain to use lights if you have them.

Valley Center Road:  ABYSMAL pavement + high speed traffic, so care is recommended

Recommend a quick drink fill and go @ gas station by Harrahs. Next water/food is on top of Palomar….

Palomar: steady 7.5% average, recommend climbing gears if you have them (50/34, 12-29 or more.) Recommend food and load up on fluids again.

East Grade: Choppy pavement begins about half-way down and stays pretty bad to bottom.

SR 76 to Mesa Grande: Ok, just high speed traffic, single file is a good idea.

Mesa Grande: Steep for the first 3 miles or so (up to 13%) then rolling. Expect windy.

Hwy 79 to Santa Ysabel â€" good pavement , tough traffic.

Dudley's: good sandwich! Load up on fluids again.

Didn’t ride the rest, expect Hwy 78 to be uncomfortable due to traffic.

Great photo record on this Flickr link from Steve Lambert, the North Carolina arm of NCCC who usually visits us this time of year. Thanks, Steve!

Steve's photos have been added to the Photo Gallery. If anyone has any other photos (Ursula and Jeff had their phones out a couple times) shoot them to me so I can add to the collection. That includes Dale, Frank, and Kevin who took a different start and rode Palomar and most of the ride.
