Portugal Tandem Trip – April 2024

Portugal Tandem Trip – April 2024

Wife Sue and I had a tandem cycling trip to Portugal that was hosted by Santana Tandem Adventures.  The trip had us river cruising down the Douro River; starting in Porto.  We’ve been on over a dozen Santana trips and the river cruises are always our favorites.  No packing/unpacking with plenty of ride options, culture and fellow tandem couples.  We met our Kansas City tandeming friends on the trip along with approximately 120 fellow cruisers/bikers.  Over the years, Santana has adapted to more ebikes and fewer tandems; with the ratio now about 60:40.  Years back, there were only a couple single bikes and all tandems.

We really enjoyed Portugal; the weather was brisk in the mornings (50’s) and would warm up to mid 60’s in the afternoon.  We were fortunate with sunny skies and only a light drizzle on our last day.  Lots of hills to climb out of the river valley.  We went through a half dozen locks on the Douro; including the tallest lock in Europe (Lock of Carrapatelo at 153 feet tall; referred to as ’The Big Mama’).   We had options of a ‘boost’ each day which was a bus to take riders out of the river valley where they could then gather their bikes from a support truck and ride on the ‘mesa’s.  We ‘boosted’ one day after a particularly challenging day of climbing.

The Portuguese really made good use of the hills; terracing them for their vineyards which made for harvesting all by hand.  We visited two wineries where they still stomp grapes ‘by foot’ a.k.a. Lucille Ball style.  Our last night on the cruise had us entertained by a local dance troupe dressed in traditional Portuguese attire performing for us on the ship.  We really enjoyed this trip as it was ’sized’ just right with plenty of riding opportunities and great remote cycling roads.
